Ben Katz’s iRadio Segment Online

A few weeks ago we mentioned that Ben Katz, CompleteCampaigns.com’s founder and president, was on the internet radio show Online Politics, talking about the YouTube presidential debates.  The segment is now online and can be heard at http://signonradio.com/programs/dp/. His segment is the Nov. 28, 2007 clip.  He also spoke on the most recent segment of the show and we’ll have that for you when it’s up.

FEC Format Changes Update

As you may be aware, the FEC just unveiled a new FEC E-filing format at the beginning of this month. As with any sweeping software change, unforeseen problems have come up. We ran into a couple of formatting errors on our side and fixed those within the first few hours. However, the FEC is experiencing a much higher volume of problems. They have been fixing most of their issues in a reasonable timeframe, but they have at least one significant problem outstanding:

Reports that were e-filed prior to a year and a half ago cannot currently be amended with the new format. We've been in touch with the FEC regarding this, and they are diligently working on a solution. They anticipate having this resolved sometime next week.

Of course, that doesn’t mean we won’t run into other issues. If you receive a Failure Notice from the FEC after e-filing, particularly when you BackOffice did not warn you about any Fatal Errors, please forward the following to Support@CompleteCampaigns.com:

  1. The FEC’s Failure Notification email.
  2. A copy of the report you were attempting to file. If you are unable to do this, state the report type (eg “Year-End”) and the dates you used to generate this report.

We will investigate the problem and get it taken care of for you as soon as possible.

So, what’s the bottom line for you?  FILE EARLY.  Please allow extra time – and patience – for potential delays in your e-filing. We recommend you start early anyway – at least two weeks in advance - but now you have extra motivation!

FEC Viewer Available

The FEC's Viewer software, which allows you to view your FEC reports, has been updated to support the new FEC version. However, the version from the FEC will only allow you to open NEW reports filed using the new system. If you also need to open old FEC reports, you can download the viewer we’ve built which can open both types. You can download it for free from our website:

www.CompleteCampaigns.com/downloads/FEC.exe

When prompted to run or save, click RUN. If Windows requires you to confirm that you would like to install, click OK or YES. If you experience problems, please contact support for assistance by emailing us at support@CompleteCampaigns.com or by calling us at 888-217-9600.

CA FPPC Viewer Update

We've been busy building a new FPPC Viewer, too! The old viewer that was provided by the Secretary of State’s office gave many of our California filers problems, like missing page numbers and summary totals. These problems should be resolved with our viewer, which you can now use for FPPC Forms 460 and 410. Once your report is finished generating, click on the name of the schedule to view it. Don't worry, if you still want to view the .CAL file, you may still click on "Download" to access it.
